I’m experimenting with writing more freely on Substack, rather than sticking rigidly to my newsletter format, let’s see how it goes…
Finding writers to read and subscribe to on Substack can seem a daunting task – there are SO many! I started off with people whose newsletter I was already subscribed to when they moved over here. From there I’ve found new writers to read in the comment section of a Substack post, I’ve followed writers’ recommendations and I’ve also found people I already know from social media writing over here.
Substack is a very different place and has a very different feel to social media and I’m finding the experience of connecting with people here much warmer and cosier than it is on other networks. Currently I feel like I’ve got one foot here and one foot in social media which is not very comfortable and at the same time I don’t feel brave enough to completely leave Insta and co alone!
Anyone else feeling like that?
However, over here I’m really enjoying reading different writers’ thoughts, their opinions, their behind-the-scenes, their wobbles, their wins. Being inspired, comforted, educated, entertained and uplifted by them. And, perhaps most importantly, feeling connected and becoming part of communities.
So, inspired by a post by Claire at Creatively Conscious, I thought I’d share a few of the posts I’ve been enjoying – this is by no means an exhaustive list. These posts are free to read although some of the writers I have paid to subscribe to their Substack.
I followed Brad via his Kid President account on social media years ago and then somehow lost track (probably thanks to the wisdom of ‘algorithms’) so I was delighted when he appeared as a Substack recommendation!
This post really spoke to me, I think we all have a cave of untold stories within us.

In this post my friend, Denise, is celebrating an excellent week after some really shoddy ones and I am ALL for celebrating the good stuff! This lifted my heart.

As an introvert who used to be very shy (two different things) and tried to pretend I wasn’t both for a looooong time, I enjoyed this post about shyness on Ellie’s Pep Talk Substack.
Back in December last year I wrote a post for Ellie about the calm kind of enthusiasm which you can read here, and she wrote a post for my Substack on enthusiasm and overwhelm which you can read here.

I’ve known Sasha for a while, we’ve chatted, I’ve joined a journalling workshop she did and her writing always gets me thinking, always, and I love that. This post about saying the thing that might feel difficult to say but ultimately paves the way to freedom and clarity, stayed with me for a long time.

I was going to share a post Emma shares regularly which is a list of all the interesting articles and books she’s read and podcast she’s listened to but realised it’s for paid subscribers so I can’t!
So instead I’m sharing this post she wrote about how Substack is working for her as a writer, with a helpful Q&A which you might find useful if you haven’t started writing on here and would like to.

And I’m sharing another post from Emma’s Substack, it’s a guest post by Farrah Storr about mediocrity challenging her perfectionism.
From this post I went over to Farrah’s Substack, and read the interview she did with Emma (are you following me so far?!), becoming a paid subscriber.

I’ve been in Susannah’s world for years, for good reason because I love what she shares. This post, essentially a numbered stream of consciousness, is delicious because it’s so relatable. We may each have different thoughts but the range and reach of them will be just as broad.

I’d love to read your recommendations for posts and Substacks you’re enjoying so do feel free to share in the comments.

Great shares, Gabrielle! I’m a big fan of Emma and Farrah (I mean who isn’t?! 😂) and Sasha’s writing is always beautiful. And new writers to investigate too, thank you. And yes, definitely resonate with the IG/Substack straddle.
