Hi lovely,
This Quiet ADHD Club I talk about – what is it exactly?
Well, it's specifically the Quiet ADHD Club because we’re women who aren’t extroverted, we’re not the life and soul of the party and we don’t want to be centre of attention. We’re often quiet, we’ve been called quiet all our lives, and we yearn to feel quiet on the inside.
Time spent with lots of people, or in bright, loud, busy stimulating environments drains our battery and we need (and enjoy) time alone to recharge. While on the outside we aren’t bounding about with endless energy, inside our minds are running at hyper speed.
The Quiet ADHD Club is for you, the quiet, introverted, sensitive, empathetic woman who’s worn out from spending your life trying so hard to fit in, to not be too much and feeling like you’re not enough.
You’ve lived your life with myriad strategies and systems to keep track of admin, to not forget or lose things, to appear organised and on top of things but it feels like a house of cards which could (and sometimes does) come crashing down at any moment.
You’re incredibly hard on yourself because one day you can be firing on all cylinders and getting loads done but then the next day you can’t focus on anything and you berate yourself for being inconsistent, lazy and erratic (echoing childhood messages).
You procrastinate to the nth degree, even on something you want to do or know that once you’re in it you’ll be completely engrossed and lose all track of time.
You try so hard to make people happy, to please and never let anyone down (or be thought of as a disappointment), even though it’s so tiring and makes you feel resentful (which then makes you feel guilty). And yet you still feel like you’re letting down others, and yourself.
You’ve spent your life trying to be who you think you’re supposed to be, containing and criticising yourself, striving to do more, to be more, to keep up but feeling like you never quite manage it.
You’ve achieved, due in no small part to striving to meet expectations, but you don’t feel like you’re living up to your potential, there’s more to you but you can’t bring it into being.
Your busy brain is a whirlwind with multiple trains of thought, ruminating or worrying about the future as well as being sensitive to everything around you including other people, it feels impossible to find calm or rest.
You’re curious and interested in so many things, you’re caring and generous, thoughtful and keen to make other people’s lives better. The playful, creative, joyful you craves more space and freedom.
You’ve been told you’re too idealistic, too scattered in your thoughts, attention and interests, too quiet, too sensitive… and it all adds up to the long-standing feeling that you’re too much and you’ll never be enough at the same time.
The toll it takes on you from working so hard to keep up the façade, hold it all together, not let anyone down, not mess up even though you feel like a fraud because you’re barely holding it together, is immense – it results in exhaustion, anxiety and burnout.
Discovering that the explanation for how you’ve thought, acted and felt all your life could be ADHD doesn’t instantly make everything better. In fact, you can’t allow yourself to believe it because surely you’re just grabbing onto an excuse for being, well, a bit crap?
You doubt those closest to you will believe it either because they see the version of you who works so hard to keep up the façade, they’ll roll their eyes and think you’re jumping on the bandwagon.
Plus, you don’t see yourself in the stereotypical presentation of ADHD, of late-diagnosed women who have unmasked and are really embracing their ADHD. You don’t feel neurospicy, neurosparkly or like a unicorn.
You feel relief that there’s an explanation for your life, grief for what could have been if you or someone else had seen this in you earlier, a sense of possibility for the future, confusion about whether you need a diagnosis, and overwhelm about what to do with this mind-boggling discovery all tangled up together.
YOU are who I created the Quiet ADHD Club for.
I created the Quiet ADHD Club because when it was confirmed, aged 48, that I’ve been living with ADHD all my life the very first sentence that popped into my head was:
“Where are all my quiet ADHD women?”
Because I’m a quiet ADHD woman and I knew there had to be other women like me out there.
That’s why I took my years of coaching experience, writing and lived experience and created the Quiet ADHD Club.
The Quiet ADHD Club is for you if you’re introverted and sensitive, have or think you have ADHD, want to gain understanding about it, ideas and support for how to work with your brain (rather than fight it) and connect with other women who just get it.
In the Quiet ADHD Club you can find understanding, guidance, community and connection, along with accountability, body-doubling sessions, deep dives into ADHD challenges, Q&As, guest experts and more.
